German Kick-off: The A1 Adventure Begins! 🇩🇪

“Hallo, wie geht’s?” – That’s just the start! But what actually defines the A1 level? On my blog, Typisch Deutsch, I’ll show you the essential basics of listening, speaking, reading, and writing that you need to navigate daily life in Germany.

From ordering a coffee to mastering official forms: discover why the A1 level is the most important foundation for your life in Germany.

Session 01: Introducing Myself In this unit, A1 students learn how to introduce themselves and others, sharing basic information such as name, origin, and place of residence. The focus is on the correct conjugation of the verbs “sein” (to be) and “heißen” (to be called), as well as using the right question words for first meetings.

Session 02: The World of Numbers A1 students discover the world of German numbers, learning their correct pronunciation and the unique characteristics of the tens range. The focus is on practical everyday use, such as providing phone numbers, prices, or addresses.

Session 03: Jobs and Hobbies In this unit, students learn important job titles and their masculine/feminine forms in a German context. The focus is on introducing one’s own profession and discussing typical daily work activities.

Session 04: Spelling Made Easy A1 students learn the German alphabet, as well as the correct pronunciation of umlauts and special letter combinations. The focus is on spelling names and terms to accurately convey important information in everyday situations.

Session 05: Family and Friends This post covers family members and friends. The grammar focus is on possessive pronouns (mein, meine) and simple sentences in the present tense.

Session 06: Shopping at the Supermarket This lesson explores the process and essential vocabulary for buying groceries in Germany. The grammar focus is on using the modal verb “möchten” (would like) and negation with “kein.”

Session 07: At the Boutique / Packing a Suitcase This post features a typical dialogue when buying clothes. The focus is on clothing vocabulary and helpful phrases for sales conversations at the A1 level.

Session 08: At the Café In this lesson, A1 students learn how to order in a German café, ask about prices, and apply important grammar topics such as the accusative case and negation.

Session 09: Living and Furniture Students learn about the most important rooms and furniture in an apartment and practice using prepositions like “in,” “auf,” and “unter” to describe locations.

Session 10: Official Time This post explains how to correctly use the 24-hour system to confidently schedule appointments in Germany.

Session 11: My Day This unit covers a typical daily routine in Germany at the A1 level. The focus is on vocabulary for different times of day and the grammar of separable verbs.

Session 12: Super-Ben A1 students learn how to express abilities using the modal verb “können” (can) and how to form the correct sentence structure.

Session 13: What can Anna do? Speaking in simple sentences about skills related to learning German, hobbies, and household tasks. This unit playfully focuses on the modal verb “können” and offers interactive exercises.

Session 14: At the Clothing Store A review of the accusative case and vocabulary fields: Supermarket, Buying Clothes, At the Café, and Family.

Session 15: At the Market A playful introduction to daily life at a German market. The focus is on food and shopping vocabulary. The central grammar theme is the accusative case, specifically with indefinite articles and quantities in typical sales dialogues.

Session 16: Faster, Higher, Further! This unit combines podcast listening comprehension and interactive exercises to teach the comparison of adjectives (comparative/superlative) in the context of typical German sports.

Session 17: Which way to the Castle, please? Using the example of the Mannheim “Quadrate,” you will learn to orient yourself in a German city and confidently ask for directions. Using interactive tools, you will turn abstract directions into a vivid virtual tour. Topics: Directions & Imperatives (“Turn left”).

Session 18: Yesterday was busy! An introduction to the Present Perfect tense (“Ich habe Fußball gespielt”). In this module, A1 learners consolidate the perfect tense through a realistic dialogue between Anna and Ben about their previous day. Combining a podcast, H5P exercises, and targeted vocabulary training, students practice the “sentence bracket” structure and the auxiliary verbs haben and sein.

English: In this lesson, A1 students learn how to confidently schedule appointments in Germany using official time formats and practical phrases. Through interactive exercises and a podcast, learners specifically practice understanding and applying the 24-hour time system in real-life contexts.
